This series covers one of Germany’s most important museums, Hamburg's Kunsthalle, and collects art historical research on the history of the institution. It begins with a publication about art dealer, collector and founder of the Kunsthalle, Georg Ernst Harzen. Another volume is devoted to the career and work of its first director, Alfred Lichtwark. Museum director Gustav Pauli is honoured with a biography and a critical edition of his travel correspondence. The volumes in the series shed light on formative personalities in the museum landscape of the 19th and 20th centuries, so making a major contribution to the study of modern museum history.
