In our nineteenth episode, we are at the Kunsthalle Mannheim. The exhibition New Objectivity – A Centennial is on view until March 9, 2025. Kevin Schneider from Deutscher Kunstverlag talks to Dr. Inge Herold, the curator of the ‘New Objectivity’ exhibition. In the podcast, she answers questions such as: What influenced people and art during this period? Why did art suddenly take an objective view of the present? How is the current exhibition structured? And how does it differ from 1925?
With the exhibition project “Die Neue Sachlichkeit – Ein Jahrhundertjubiläum”, the Kunsthalle Mannheim looks back on what is undoubtedly the best-known and most important exhibition in its 100-year history. The major anniversary exhibition is divided into various thematic areas in which the exhibition concept of the time is scrutinized and critically supplemented. At the same time, the political climate of the rise of National Socialism is addressed.
Around 200 works by almost 100 artists from national and international lenders as well as from the museum’s own collection will be on display in the exhibition. The focus is on themes such as current affairs, people’s everyday lives, industrialization, a new mobility, the image of the human being and the image of women as well as portraits, still lifes and landscapes, which characterize this era as one of upheavals and contrasts.
