The project to digitise the analogue “Stern” Photo Archive at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (BSB) in Munich entails digitising and cataloguing three million photographs and storing them on a dedicated portal developed specially for this purpose (<www.stern-fotoarchiv.de>). This paper explains how the photographs – the archive as a whole comprises some fifteen million objects – are slowly but surely being rendered visible and available for use on the said BSB portal. It sets out the key principles of the underlying concept, the structure of the portal, and the many different ways in which the material can be used.
