The historical archive of the Bruckmann publishing house in Munich features a well-preserved stock of photographic sources of one of the largest publishing and print institution in Germany. This self-contained collection found its way to the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (ZI) in Munich in the autumn of 2016. The holdings including about 150,000 photographic media units stand out for the great diversity of materials and subject matter spanning a period from approximately 1860 to the 1990s. The archive consists of positives and negatives reproducing works of art, primarily painting, sculpture, as well as architecture, and the retouchings and annotations of them present additional opportunities for research into the publishing process. This historical photo archive was long thought tobe lost and is now being made available for research for the first time.
